Slider Widgets Around the Web

Chatting earlier today around an app in development (that we're not talking about in public yet, Martin... ;-), we started thinking about mood profiles and how we might capture mood information. One approach we discussed was to use a simple mood slider.

What feels like an age ago, I posted about the Facebook News Mixing Desk, which provided a list of sliders that let you blend the mix of news items appearing in your Facebook news feed.

A quick dig around today turned up the following application on the Walmart website, of all places, where a range of sliders are used to describe how you're feeling as the basis for a movie recommendation: Walmart Movie Match

The search doesn't seem to work that well (some of the movies dominate some of the mood components), but the idea is an interesting one.

The interface actually reminds me of the Amazon Diamond Search; here, sliders are used to limit various diamond options, such as the price, cut, or size of the diamond

A long time ago I doodled on paper a rotary switch style interface for white goods selection, that allowed you to set a median price point and power efficiency, and then use a simple vector calculation to rank the results. Maybe I should have another look at that, one day?!

Finally, whilst on the topic of slider interfaces, Yahoo MindSet is another I'm aware of; this allows you to shape the ranking of results from Yahoo based on whether you are doing research or shopping...

I haven't really been keeping up with visual search engines, but here's where I tend to bookmark them to: http://del.icio.us/psychemedia/visual+search
