Kirsty Baker in the Library passed me a couple of links today to services that render citation details in a recognised citation format: Citation Machineand StudentABC Citation Composer.

Here's the latter:

This sort of tool looks like it may provide a useful starting point for teaching students about citation formats, in advance of moving them up to full blown citation management tools, (RefWorks is the service we make available to students).

It's also something that's easily integrated into the OU Traveller script by reusing the book details code I posted a few days ago, which you may remember looks up the details of a book given its ISBN using an Amazon webservice, creates a form mimicking a form somewhere else on the web, completes the form using the book details from Amazon and then posts the form automatically. Anyway, here's the demo - a cut down OU Traveller form:

The citation that's generated:

It's even editable:

Here's the script: OU Traveller - book citation.

Now I wonder, does the library catalogue have links to common citation style formats from book records in the catalogue?

Update: Here's a bookmarklet that will take the user to the 'cite this web page' form: Cite this page.
