I've just managed to steal a little time to play with a couple of the new Google Visualisation gadgets. There seem straightforward enough to use, and the integration with Google spreadsheets means that one you get the data into a spreadsheet you can start to play with it.
I went off and pinched some data from UCAS (UCAS admissions data) and used it to generate a Trendalyser view - now known as a Motion Chart - was trivial (feed readers, you'll have to click through to see and play with it ;-)
Firstly, a look at how admissions are faring in a handful of institutions:
Here's another one, this time looking at some demographics data:
Now, I wonder what sorts of things we can do with the Course Profiles data...? ;-)

Yes - the s/w is actually called trendalyser; Google bought it last year - and this is the result...
