OUseful Jobs Round Up, May 2007

Coffee time, so here's another in an occasional series of quick OU jobs round ups.

Hmmm - I thought there were a few more than these around - maybe I missed the closing dates on them all...

Anyway - here's what there is that are maybe interesting to readers:

  • Programmer/Web Developer, Institute of Educational Technology: "The key role of this position is to carry out software and web development for a variety of externally-funded educational technology projects. Past projects have included knowledge management tools, a learning design player and new feature development for the open-source virtual learning environment Moodle. There is a growing interest in social software in the Institute and it is possible some projects may be in this area. The position is based in the small development team within the Institute's C&IT team."
  • Project Manager (Digital Audio Project), Disabled Student Services, Teaching & Learner Support : "Since its inception, The OU has been at the forefront of technological innovations enabling students with disabilities to access tertiary education. Having pioneered our own talking book system in 1996, we [Disabled Student Services] are now updating, improving and expanding our audio recording systems to enable us to provide a better service for students with print disabilities and to comply with DAISY (the growing international standard for digital talking books). We need an experienced and professional project manager to lead this project."
  • Full-time Postgraduate Research Studentships, Knowledge Media Institute: "The Knowledge Media Institute is home to internationally recognised researchers in semantic technologies, educational multimedia, collaboration technologies, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and human-computer interaction. KMi offers students an intellectually challenging environment with exceptional research and computer facilities. We are currently seeking applications for full-time, 3-year research studentships on the following PhD projects: Dynamics of the Semantic Web; Trustworthiness of Semantic Web Data Sources; Harvesting Knowledge for Supporting Dynamic Ontology Evolution;"
  • Media Practice and Training Adviser, Learning & Teaching Solutions (LTS) : "We are looking for an experienced media professional to advise on best practice and to train colleagues in support of the editorial function in LTS. The editorial role spans the full range of media. This position will provide professional support to the Head of Editing to embed professional practices among media staff; support the implementation of new production processes; and facilitate the effective use of technical tools and systems. You will also liaise between the media production area and the technical teams who provide the systems that support production. Whilst having significant experience of media production, including the handling of text in electronic formats, you will understand the editorial role in both print and online publishing, and the technical tools that underpin it. You will also be able to convey technical ideas in clear language, and be confident in addressing small and large groups. Knowledge of XML, HTML and the use of structured approaches to authoring and content management are important. Experience of delivering training would be an advantage."
  • Corporate Communications Manager, Communications*: "We are looking for a Corporate (internal) Communications Manager to help us align our internal communications with our external image. A skilled communicator with a strategic approach you will play a strong part in developing effective communications systems, including our intranet, with professionals from within the group and with colleagues throughout the university."
  • Communications Project Officer, Communications: "In an increasingly multi-media communications environment we need a generalist PR professional to us. You will work on a wide variety of projects and in all media from print to broadcast and web. We want a creative with energy and flair but also good finisher-completer skills. You will work in a range of teams depending on the project. You will have developed writing skills and press-office experience and one of your tasks will be to build-up and maintain a database of articles to place in a range of partner publications. You will also be involved in our web development - including IPTV." [This is the way to do it: OpenLearn Comms team...]
  • User Services Officer, Research Computing Support, Academic & Administrative Computing Services: "The University supports a vibrant research portfolio and fosters research groups who compete with top ranked institutions in the UK and worldwide. Computing Services is seeking to strengthen its support capability to these units. The Specialist Support team within Computing Services has a wide support remit which includes providing assistance to researchers in all University Faculties. We're looking for someone with significant experience of using computers in research, or of supporting academic researchers with their computing needs. You should have a user-focused orientation, combined with a good knowledge of IT. Familiarity with research related software for one or more of Science, Mathematics or Technology is essential."

PS one more, just now - E-Learning Designer – KTP Associate, Knowledge Media Institute: "Milton Keynes City Discovery Centre (MKCDC) is an internationally leading organisation in the delivery of stimulating and accessible learning in urban geography. The Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) is an interdisciplinary research centre with extensive experience in developing and deploying new technologies to support learning and work. Through this Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), MKCDC aims to develop a new generation geography e-learning product that will scaffold students in navigating the available educational assets, and support teachers in guiding and monitoring learner activity. You will work closely with staff from KMi and MKCDC on a range of activities related to the development of this product including: elicitation of requirements, analysis of MKCDC’s assets, evaluation of prototypes, product demonstration and training."

* Note to self: further particulars of this post describes the structure of the Comms unit as follows:

Media Relations - relations with external print and broadcast media at national, international, regional and local levels, and the media training of Open University staff.
Publications - our newspapers Sesame (for students), Open House (staff) and Open Eye (alumni), and a variety of other newspapers, fact sheets and other documents.
Corporate Communications - the University's internal; communications and change communication service.
Web Co-ordination - intranet and internet the - University's on-line service developer and coordinator, managing external web and internal intranet development.
Support Team - provides secretarial and clerical support across the unit and front of house services (switchboard and reception) for the University.
Events & Exhibitions - Manages university events and exhibitions both on and off campus and provides audio visual support across the University
Major Projects and Change - Manages the array of special projects and major change programmes that are undertaken by Communications (e.g. the move to broadcast media).

  • Secondment Opportunity at the Scottich Museums Council, ICT Development Manager: "During the period of this appointment, the specific focus will be to lead the review of a national ICT strategy for Scotland's museums, now 3 years old, by evaluating progress to date, scoping needs and opportunities, consulting with museums and key stakeholders and setting new goals and actions for the coming 3 years.
